CCU to screen ‘Crash’ as part of film series

March 22, 2017

"Crash," a 2004 Oscar-winning drama co-written, produced and directed by Paul Haggis, will be shown at Coastal Carolina University on Tuesday, March 28, at 5 p.m. in The Coastal Theater of the Lib Jackson Student Union, Room A-110. The event is free and open to the public.

The film follows several characters from different racial and socioeconomic backgrounds in the 36-hour period following a carjacking in Los Angeles. The film stars Sandra Bullock, Don Cheadle, Matt Dillon, Jennifer Esposito, Ludacris, Thandie Newton, Ryan Phillippe, Michael Pena, Terrance Howard, Brendan Fraser and William Fichtner.

Crash won Academy Awards for best motion picture of the year, best original screenplay, and best film editing.

The film is based on an incident in Haggis' life when his Porsche was carjacked on Wilshire Boulevard in Santa Monica, Calif., in 1991.

The film is being shown as a part of a film series sponsored by CCU's Department of Communication, Media and Culture. Following the film, Andrea Bergstrom and Deborah Breede of CCU's communication faculty will lead a discussion about the film's themes of communication, race and interpersonal relationships. The final film in the series, "Concussion," will be show on Tuesday, April 25, at 5 p.m.

The Lib Jackson Student Union is located at 100 Spadoni Park Circle on the main Conway campus.
