Coastal Carolina University and Brandonbilt Racing revealed NASCAR driver and CCU alumnus Brandon Brown's throwback car at Darlington Raceway on Aug. 13 in conjunction with Darlington Raceway's Throwback Weekend, which focuses on the years 1990-1994. Brown's No. 86 Coastal Carolina ZL1 Chevrolet Camaro throwback look pays homage to Terry Labonte's 1993 Kellogg's Cornflakes car; 1993 is the year CCU achieved status as an independent, public institution.

"We appreciate Coastal Carolina University, Brandon Brown and Terry Labonte for unveiling their special paint scheme at Darlington Raceway and for their overall participation in our award-winning throwback program," track President Kerry Tharp said. "Our race fans love seeing these special schemes, and to honor a NASCAR Hall of Famer like Labonte is what this platform is all about - honoring the past, present and future of the sport."

Brown, 25, graduated from CCU in 2018 with a degree in communication and now races full-time in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, driving the No. 68 and No. 86 Chevrolet Camaros for Brandonbilt. This is the third year that CCU is the driver and car sponsor of Brandon Brown.

"The partnership with CCU has granted me so many experiences and wonderful relationships," said Brown. "I have been very thankful for their continued support and for allowing me to attain a college degree as well as continue my journey with racing. To pair with a NASCAR Hall of Fame member and a school that has supported me for this long is amazing."

Labonte started his racing career at Darlington in 1978 and is a two-time NASCAR Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion. He was named one of NASCAR's 50 greatest drivers in 1998 and was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2016.

CCU worked closely with Brown and BrandonBilt Racing to identify a throwback paint scheme that has meaning for both parties. Labonte's Kellogg's car was only in action during the 1993 season, and 1993 is the first year of public, independent status as a university for CCU.

"Although we've added our unique colors of teal and bronze to the throwback car, we feel confident that NASCAR fans will immediately recognize the very familiar features of Terry Labonte's 1993 Kellogg's car."

Brown has had a solid full-time rookie season, working as both driver and marketing director for Brandonbilt Motorsports. He has more than 20 starts under his belt, including a sixth-place finish at Daytona.

He started racing a part-time schedule in 2014-2015 with the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, with eight starts and a best finish of 14th at Dover. In 2016, he ran both the truck series and the NASCAR Xfinity Series, with a best finish in the latter of 23rd at Miami. He had 10 starts in 2017 in the Xfinity Series with a best finish of 17th at Dover, and in 2018 he saw six starts and a best finish of 18th.

"Brandon Brown racing and Brandonbilt Motorsports have surprised NASCAR and the garage with the performance this season and the accomplishments achieved," Brown said. "I have heard many times in the garage about how no one thought we would be as competitive as we are or make it this far. I can't thank everyone enough for the support given this season and all the #BB86 fans, many of whom are Coastal students, alumni and parents.
