CCU to host seminar by distinguished biochemist Nahum Sonenberg

The Horry County Higher Education Commission and Coastal Carolina University’s Gupta College of Science, in conjunction with the Disease Modeling Research Center at CCU, are hosting a seminar featuring distinguished biochemist Nahum Sonenberg, Ph.D. The event, titled “Translational Control of Learning and Memory, Fragile X Syndrome, and Clinical Depression via eIF4E and eIF2,” will be held on Wednesday, April 19, at 4 p.m. in Brittain Hall, room 114, and is free and open to the public.

Sonenberg is the Gilman Cheney Chair in Biochemistry at the Rosalind and Morris Goodman Cancer Institute at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. He earned a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the Weizmann Institute of Science.

Sonenberg is the recipient of several distinguished awards and prizes, including the Robert L. Noble Prize of the National Cancer Institute of Canada, the Killiam Prize for Health Sciences, the Gairdner Foundation International Award, and the Wolf Prize in Medicine, among many others. In 2006, Sonenberg was elected as a fellow of The Royal Society and, in 2010, he was appointed the title of Officer of the Order of Canada.
