The Coastal Carolina University Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts presents a reading by globally renowned poet A.E. Stallings. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held Monday, Oct. 9, at 6:30 p.m. in Johnson Auditorium, Wall Building Room 116.

Stallings is a poet, critic, and translator who studied classics at the University of Georgia and Oxford University. She has published four poetry collections and, most recently, a book of selected poems titled This Afterlife (2022), as well as three volumes of verse translation. Stallings’ work Like was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, and she has received grants and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Guggenheim and MacArthur foundations. In June 2023, Stallings was elected to the post of Oxford Professor of Poetry, the second woman and first person from outside the British Isles to hold this post in its 315-year history.

Hastings Hensel, senior lecturer of poetry in CCU’s Department of English, said Stallings’ work blends classic and contemporary elements.

“Stallings’ poetry is formal and smart, witty and clever,” said Hensel. “She finds the profound within the ordinary and is a deft metaphor-maker and rhymer. You can tell that her own work is influenced by her translations, and vice versa. She is one of the few living American poets I know who still straddles the ancient and modern worlds.”

Stallings’ poems and essays appear in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Times Literary Supplement, American Scholar, and elsewhere. She resides in Athens, Greece.
