CCU’s Department of Theatre presents Anton Chekhov’s Three Sisters
Three Sisters, which originally opened in 1901 at the Moscow Art Theatre, traces the lives of Olga, Masha, and Irina Prozorov, who live within the confines of a provincial town and dream of one day traveling to Moscow. Steven Higginbotham, professor and chair of CCU’s Department of Theatre, directs the production.
“In bringing [Three Sisters] to the stage in 2024, we sought to find a way into the work that felt relevant to why it would be produced now, while maintaining the play's historical and structural integrity,” said Higginbotham. “In doing so, we have found resonance with Ukrainian heritage, culture, and folk songs, moments of poetic realism and imagistic montage, and a production design that includes compelling projections, artistically crafted theatrical lighting, historically accurate costumes, and a flexible set. We hope the audience will feel drawn in to experience the beauty and poetry of this play in a way that is visually and sensually inspiring.”
Daniel Hobbs, CCU professor of set design, is projection designer of the production as well as co-scenic designer with students.
“The show is set all within one house in the Russian countryside, in the area of what would be Ukraine now,” said Hobbs. “It’s entirely about the house and the family within it and how it changes through the years. In the opening, people will see wood floors, birch trees, the feel of the Russian countryside. They also get a silhouette of the house, so we are always surrounded by what the shape and feel of that house is. In that silhouette is where a lot of our images and projections are going to be, which help those artistic and poetic moments resonate.”
