"Mind Frames II," a selection of recent paintings by Charles M. Dorn, professor of art education at Florida State University, will be exhibited in the Rebecca Randall Bryan Art Gallery at Coastal Carolina University beginning Friday, Feb. 28. The exhibition will open with a reception and lecture by the artist at 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

According to Dorn, his painting has been influenced by the artists associated with the New York School of abstract expressionism, particularly Mark Rothko, Jack Tworkov and Helen Frankenthaler.

"All painting is an abstraction, and in my case the work is both abstract and non-associative," says Dorn. "Artistic form, which refers only to itself, really interests me and, I hope, the viewer also, because it refers only to concepts unfettered by a real world or a body politic and shared only in the painter's or the viewer's imagination."

Dorn earned a bachelor's and a master's degree from Peabody College at Vanderbilt University and a doctorate from the University of Texas. He has been a professor at California State University and the head of the Department of Creative Arts at Purdue University. He joined the faculty of Florida State University in 1986.

The exhibit will be on display through Thursday, April 17.

The Rebecca Randall Bryan Art Gallery is located in the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts Building on the Coastal Carolina University campus. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
