"Slavery in our Souls" topic of historian's talk

Internationally renowned historian John David Smith will deliver the Phi Alpha Theta address at Coastal Carolina University on Monday, Nov. 17, at 4 p.m. in the Wall Auditorium. The public is invited, and there is no charge.

Smith will speak on the topic "Slavery on Our Minds and in Our Souls: The 'Peculiar Institution' Today as Idea and Symbol."

Smith, who is graduate alumni distinguished professor of history at North Carolina State University, has also served as Fulbright Professor of American Studies at the Amerika -Institut, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitat in Munich, Germany .

He is the author or editor of 17 books. His "Anti-Black Thought" (1993) won the Gustavus Myers Center Award for the Study of Human Rights in North America, and his "Black Judas" (2000) won the Mayflower Society Award for nonfiction.
