Coastal Carolina bands offer year-end concert

Jazz After Hours, the student jazz band, will join forces with the Coastal Carolina University Symphonic Band and the Concert Choir for a free holiday concert at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 2, at Wheelwright Auditorium.

The jazz band will perform a mix of standards and contemporary arrangements including works by Bennie Goodman, David Sanborn and Richard Rogers. The Vince Guaraldi theme song from "A Charlie Brown Christmas" will be on the program, along with an arrangement of "Blue Moon" arranged for the big band and performed by four singers.

The 40-member symphonic orchestra will perform pieces including "Armenian Dances," folk songs from Armenia, as well as works by composers Percy Grainger and Philip Sousa.

The 30-voice student choir will sing Handel's "Halleluiah Praise the Lord," "Let There Be Peace on Earth" and "Carol of the Bells" with hand bells. Other favorites include "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year," "The 12 Days After Christmas," "Down Home Deck the Halls" and a new version of "We Wish You a Merry Christmas."

Carolers will perform in the Wheelwright lobby 30 minutes before the concert.

Dan O'Reilly, music teaching associate, directs the jazz band, Jim Tully, assistant professor of music, is director of the symphonic band, and Patti Edwards, assistant professor of performing arts, directs the choir. For more information, call the Wheelwright Box Office at 349-2502.
