'Sarah Plain and Tall' comes to Coastal on April 20

March 26, 2004

Coastal Carolina University is bringing "Sarah Plain and Tall" to campus on Tuesday, April 20 at 7:30 p.m. in Wheelwright Auditorium.

The musical production is a presentation of Theatreworks USA. General admission is $15, but students 18 and under are admitted free.

Based on Patricia MacLachlan's Newbery Award-winning book "Sarah, Plain and Tall," the frontier story is about the power of love. Answering a widower's advertisement for a "mail-order bride," Sarah Wheaton travels from the coast of Maine to the prairies of Kansas in hopes of making a life for herself. Not only does Sarah take to the duties of caring for the two motherless children with liveliness and compassion, she teaches them and their father that life and love do go on.

Robin Benson stars as Sarah, and five other professional actors join her in the touching family musical. Julia Jordon wrote the screenplay, Nell Benjamin wrote the lyrics, and Laurence O'Keefe and Larry Nell wrote the music for the production. Jesse Bush is the director.

TheatreworksUSA, a professional theater group for family audiences, tours all over the United States to 47 states each year.
