Humanities Board of Visitors gives local scholarships

Two students at Coastal Carolina University have received $2,000 scholarships from the Board of Visitors of the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts.

Tina Cavalieri of Surfside Beach, an art major, has been awarded the Edwards College Board of Visitors Scholarship in the Humanities and Visual Arts based on her talent, leadership and academic performance. A senior, Cavalieri is a member of the Waccamaw Arts and Crafts Guild, a volunteer at Seaside Elementary School, and she has taught summer art classes to children at Brookgreen Gardens.

Chris Bergamo, a senior musical theater major, of Toms River, N.J., will be the first recipient of the Edwards College Board of Visitors Scholarship in the Performing Arts, an award created to recognize outstanding students in music, musical theater and dramatic arts. Bergamo, who earned a degree in early childhood education from Coastal two years ago, is now working toward a degree in musical theater. He has performed in five Coastal musicals including, most recently, "The Baker's Wife" and "City of Angels." This summer he will play the lead role in "Texas Legacies," an outdoor drama near Amarillo, Texas.

The Edwards College Board of Visitors comprises area professionals and community volunteers who advise and support the college in fulfilling the mission of Coastal Carolina University.
