Horace Carter, founder and former editor-publisher of The Tabor City Tribune in Tabor City, N.C., won a Pulitzer Prize in 1953 for his courageous coverage of Ku Klux Klan activities in Columbus County, North Carolina, and Horry County, South Carolina, in the early 1950s.
