OUR MISSION

First in S.C., First in Space. We aim to be the first university-based space program in South Carolina to successfully design, build, and conduct orbital operations of a CubeSat small satellite mission.

Student-Centered Experiential Learning. At the core of our program is a dedication to student-centered education. We provide unique opportunities for students to develop science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) skills through the experiences of planning and operating a space program. Our program nurtures the next generation of leaders and innovators in space technology.

Scientific Innovation for Coastal, Wetlands, and Water Resources Management. We are committed to leveraging space technology to conduct scientific research aimed at addressing pressing issues in the management of the coastal environment. Our focus includes monitoring and managing coastal erosion, sea-level rise, stormwater runoff, and other ecological concerns critical to the health of South Carolina's coastal regions. We are devoted to maintaining healthy drinking water by utilizing satellite technology to monitor water quality, mitigate stormwater runoff, and implement solutions for sustainable water management in the face of climate change.

Real-Time Geospatial-Intelligence Collection and Analysis. The CCU space program will provide an innovative educational experience for students in intelligence and security studies. Utilizing the department’s Intelligence Operations Command Center, students will be able to enhance their educational experience by working through the entire geospatial intelligence cycle – from collection, processing, exploitation, and analysis, to the production of finished geospatial intelligence projects.

Data-Driven Insights for Preservation of Cultural-Heritage Assets and Community Development. We strive to use space and small satellite technology to safeguard and manage cultural-heritage assets, ensuring the preservation of South Carolina's rich cultural history. Our space program will contribute to the identification, monitoring, and protection of these assets. By utilizing CubeSat satellites, we aim to empower decision-makers with accurate, real-time information to support sustainable development initiatives.

Infrastructure and Agriculture Resilience Against Natural Disasters. Our space program is committed to developing and implementing innovative solutions to mitigate and respond to the effects of flooding, hurricanes, tornadoes, and other natural disasters. Through advanced satellite technology, we aim to enhance preparedness and response strategies. We strive to address the challenges of land-use disruption by incorporating innovative techniques for sustainable agriculture practices. Our program will explore and develop resilience strategies to ensure crop security in the face of environmental uncertainties. We are also dedicated to protecting and improving the resilience of critical infrastructure, including power grids, pipe networks, and communication systems. Our satellite-based solutions will contribute to the development of robust and adaptive systems to withstand the impacts of climate change, natural disasters, and severe space weather events.

In summary, the CCU Space Program is committed to utilizing space technology as a catalyst for positive change, student development, fostering scientific innovation, and sustainable solutions to enhance the well-being and resilience of our coastal communities.
