The Spadoni College of Education Social Studies Program Wins State Award

The M.A.T. Social Studies Program has won the 2007 South Carolina Council for the Social Studies Program of Excellence Award.  The purpose of the award is to identify and provide recognition for outstanding social studies programs currently being implemented in the Palmetto State and to encourage the growth and development of innovative and effective programs in the social studies.

As a result of winning the State Award, the Coastal Carolina University’s M.A.T. Social Studies Program will apply for the 2008 National Council for the Social Studies Program of Excellence Award.

This award was presented to Dr. Emory Helms at the South Carolina Council for the Social Studies Conference, held Friday and Saturday, October 5 and 6, 2007, at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.

The 4th Annual Ethics Symposium at Coastal Carolina University, Spadoni College of Education, will be held on Thursday, March 13, 2008 in Wheelwright Auditorium at 6:30 pm.

Professor James A. Banks will be the speaker.  Professor Banks has been a researcher and leader in efforts to increase educational equality for all students in the United States and the world for more than three decades.  Banks has pursued questions related to education, racial inequality, and social justice in more than 100 journal articles and 20 books.  His book, Diversity and Citizenship Education:  Global Perspectives, examines the unity-diversity tension in 12 nations.  His most recent book is Race, Culture, and Education:  The Selected Works of James A. Banks (Routledge, 2006).
