Sustain Coastal will host its annual Campus Salvage sale on Saturday, May 13, from 7-9 a.m. at Coastal Carolina University. The sale is designed to promote sustainability, raise money for scholarships, and keep unwanted items out of landfills. This year’s event will be held in the YY parking lot on S.C. 544, just south of Brooks Stadium. Event organizers said this new location provides ample space for parking and shopping.

The entry fee is $5 per person and the sale is cash only. Most items are priced at only $1. Mini fridges are $35, small appliances are $5, and all other specialty items are priced as marked. Items are sold as is, and all sales are final. All proceeds continue to further sustainability efforts on campus and contribute to the CCU Endowed Sustainability Scholarship Fund.

The Campus Salvage program began in 2008 as an effort to reduce waste and increase awareness for sustainability.

“It has been a pleasure to watch this program grow in scale and popularity since my time as a student at CCU,” said Cassandra LaValley, Sustain Coastal’s sustainability coordinator. “The growth has been possible due to the willingness of our students to donate their items and their passion for environmental stewardship by keeping things out of the landfill; exactly what this program was intended to do.”

Any unsold items are donated to the following local charities: Goodwill, Churches Assisting People, Waccamaw Youth Center, Fostering Hope, North Strand Housing Shelter, Grand Strand Humane Society, Horry County Animal Care Center, Sea Haven for Youth, Community Kitchen, and Shepherd’s Table. Donations are also provided to the on-campus CINO Pantry, a free food and resource pantry open to all CCU students, faculty, and staff.

“Campus Salvage provides a unique opportunity to share our commitment to sustainability with the local community, both through the sale and donations to community organizations,” said LaValley. “Our team spends several weeks organizing and ensuring local nonprofits are receiving the items they need. We take great pride in this program and our dedication to helping people and the planet, both on and off campus.”
