Cultural calendar: Fiction writer Jon Chopan visits CCU to read from short-story collection about Iraq war veterans
Chopan is the winner of the 2018 Grace Paley Prize for Short Fiction for his collection "Veterans Crisis Hotline." This collection of 12 short stories, each narrated by a different veteran of the Iraq war who has called a veteran crisis hotline, explores the tragedies and attempts at recovery among soldiers during and after the war.

The Department of Music presents "A Little Bit O' Broadway" at 7:30 p.m. in the Edwards Recital Hall. The Coastal Carolina University Concert Choir, featuring 20 student soloists, will be performing selections from Broadway, including songs from "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum," "Les Miserables," "The Phantom of the Opera," "Ragtime" and "West Side Story."

The Department of Music presents Calypsamba Ritmo Brasileiro at 7:30 p.m. in the Coastal Theater (Lib Jackson Student Union, A-110). This concert is a collaborative performance between the CCU World Percussion Ensemble, directed by Jesse Willis, associate professor in the Department of Music, and the University of North Carolina at Wilmington Latin Jazz Combo, directed by Natalie Boeyink. Featuring both individual and shared performances, the concert will highlight the diverse musical landscape of Brazil, including popular and folkloric styles.

FILM
The Department of English presents a free screening of "Solaris" (1972) at 5 p.m. in the Coastal Theater (Lib Jackson Student Union, A-110) as part of the Crisis of Faith, Identity and Society Series. Directed by Andrei Tarkovsky and based on the 1961 novel by Sanislaw Lem, "Solaris" is a psychological tale of space exploration and the nature of human and alien intelligence. Following the screening, Anna Oldfield, associate professor; Christian Smith, assistant professor; and Emma Howes, assistant professor, all of the Department of English, will discuss the cultural context of the film.

The Department of Music presents "Hearts Wide Open" at 7:30 p.m. in Edwards Recital Hall. This concert features the singer/songwriter talents of select CCU music students showcasing their original material, together with new songs written and performed by David Bankston, professor; Andy Fowler, lecturer; and Dan O'Reilly, lecturer, all of the Department of Music.

The Department of Music presents Chamber Wind Music: Family and Friends at 7:30 p.m. in Wheelwright Auditorium. CCU faculty in the Department of Music collaborate with artists from the Grand Strand area to perform a concert of chamber wind band music featuring composers of the 19th century under the direction of Richard Johnson, professor. The concert will showcase instrumental chamber music by Czech composer AntonÃn Dvorák, American composer Arthur Bird and French composer Charles Gounod.

CONFERENCE
The Charles Joyner Institute for Gullah and African Diaspora Studies presents the inaugural International Gullah Geechee and African Diaspora Conference throughout the CCU campus. This three-day event features presentations and performances, many of which are free and open to the public, including a spoken word poetry reading with South Carolina poet laureate Marcus Amaker at 7 p.m. in Johnson Auditorium, Wall 116; a Salute to Gullah featuring the Geechee Gullah Ring Shouters, actor/storytellers Ron and Natalie Daise, and Gullah folktale storyteller Aunt Pearlie Sue (March 8); and Community Day (March 9), dedicated to the history, customs and stories of our local Gullah communities.

LECTURE
The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute presents a lecture by Salma Oubkkou, teaching associate in CCU's Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies through the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant Program. Oubkkou will give a lecture titled "Moroccan Women and the Legitimacy of Hope After the Arab Spring" in the Burroughs & Chapin Center, Room 100. The event begins with a coffee social at 9:30 with the presentation at 10 a.m. Oubkkou will examine and evaluate the position of Moroccan women after the Arab Spring.
