About

The School of Coastal and Marine Systems Science was formed to house the Burroughs and Chapin Center for Marine and Wetland Studies and the related graduate program offering a Ph.D. in Marine Science: Coastal and Marine Systems Science and a M.S in Coastal Marine and Wetland Studies.

Faculty from the School and affiliated departments across the university focus on diverse research areas seeking to better understand the nature of coastal environments and processes. The School frequently works across traditional disciplinary boundaries as well as a range of spatial and temporal scales necessary to fully describe these systems. It places a high value on engaging the best science available to aid society, best manage coastal resources, and encourage faculty and students scientists to engage in management efforts.

Mission Statement

The mission of the School of Coastal and Marine Systems Science is to:

• advance the understanding of the complex interconnected environmental processes within the coastal zone through basic and applied research,
• to train the next generation of coastal scientist to apply this knowledge to predict coastal environmental behavior and aid in addressing environmental issues important to society, and
• to communicate the best science available to help society effective manage its critical coastal natural resources and the economies dependent upon them.
