COMMERCIAL MUSIC AND JAZZ

Voice

  • Perform two songs by memory:

    • One selection in a jazz style. (Great American Songbook ie. Porter, Gershwin, Lerner/Loewe, Rodgers/Hart, etc).

    • One selection in a pop/commercial style.

  • A piano accompanist will be provided for your audition. Please bring piano music for your selected song placed in a three-ring binder.

 

Woodwinds/Brass/Strings

  •  Play all 12 major and 12 minor scales (Eighth notes at 120 bpm)

  •  Play the melody and improvise over a Concert F Blues of your choice (accompanied by the faculty). Ex: Bags Groove, Now’s the Time

  •  Perform a piece of your choosing in a commercial/jazz style by memory (student is responsible for bringing any necessary accompaniment tracks)

  •  Chromatic Scale (Full Range)

  •  Sight-reading

Piano/Keyboard

  • Play all 12 major in 4 octaves (All minor scales highly encouraged)

  • Perform a piece of your choosing in a commercial/jazz style by memory (student is responsible for bringing any necessary accompaniment tracks)

    • Be able to play chords and melody

    • Selection must show understanding of the role of the instrument in an ensemble setting

    • This selection may also be a solo piano piece in a commercial, jazz, or classical style

  • Optional but strongly encouraged: Play the melody, comp for one chorus, and improvise over an F Blues of your choice (accompanied by the faculty). Ex: Bags Groove, Now’s the Time

    • An All-State jazz etude may be performed in place of this component

  • Sight-reading

Guitar and Bass (acoustic or electric)

  •  Play all 12 major and 12 minor scales (Eighth notes at 120 bpm)

  •  Play the melody, comp for one chorus, and improvise over a 12-bar F Blues of your choice (accompanied by the faculty). Ex: Bags Groove, Now’s the Time

  •  Perform a piece of your choosing in a commercial/jazz style by memory (student is responsible for bringing any necessary accompaniment tracks)

    • Be able to play chords and melody

    • Selection must show understanding of the role of the instrument in an ensemble setting

  • Sight-reading

Drums

  • Play and improvise over a 12-bar blues in a swing feel (accompanied by the faculty).Ex: Bags Groove, Now’s the Time

  • Demonstrate the following musical styles: Rock, Latin, and Funk

  • Prepare a rudimental snare drum solo of your choosing

    • Selections can be from the following or a similar resource

      • 14 modern Contest Solos (John S. Pratt)

      • Modern Swing Solos (Charlie Wilcoxin)

      • Rudimental Cookbook (Edward Freytag)

  • Drumset sight-reading

  • Prepare a mallet solo on either vibes or marimba (2 or 4 mallets). If you have no mallet experience, you may choose to omit this portion of the audition, but we highly encourage you to try to play something.

    • Selections can be from the following or a similar resource

      • The Real Book
