COMMERCIAL MUSIC AND JAZZ

Perform two songs by memory:
- One selection in a jazz style. (Great American Songbook ie. Porter, Gershwin, Lerner/Loewe, Rodgers/Hart, etc).
- One selection in a pop/commercial style.
A piano accompanist will be provided for your audition. Please bring piano music for your selected song placed in a three-ring binder.

Play all 12 major and 12 minor scales (Eighth notes at 120 bpm)
Play the melody and improvise over a Concert F Blues of your choice (accompanied by the faculty). Ex: Bags Groove, Now’s the Time
Perform a piece of your choosing in a commercial/jazz style by memory (student is responsible for bringing any necessary accompaniment tracks)

Sight-reading

Play all 12 major in 4 octaves (All minor scales highly encouraged)
Perform a piece of your choosing in a commercial/jazz style by memory (student is responsible for bringing any necessary accompaniment tracks)
- Be able to play chords and melody
- Selection must show understanding of the role of the instrument in an ensemble setting
- This selection may also be a solo piano piece in a commercial, jazz, or classical style
Optional but strongly encouraged: Play the melody, comp for one chorus, and improvise over an F Blues of your choice (accompanied by the faculty). Ex: Bags Groove, Now’s the Time
- An All-State jazz etude may be performed in place of this component

Prepare a rudimental snare drum solo of your choosing

  - 14 modern Contest Solos (John S. Pratt)
  - Modern Swing Solos (Charlie Wilcoxin)
  - Rudimental Cookbook (Edward Freytag)
Drumset sight-reading
Prepare a mallet solo on either vibes or marimba (2 or 4 mallets). If you have no mallet experience, you may choose to omit this portion of the audition, but we highly encourage you to try to play something.
