King's Video

King Brown III knows he has a lot to offer. The senior communication student and Teal Trailblazer from Charleston, S.C., describes himself as special, citing the lasting impression he leaves on others as evidence.

“There is something about me that I feel everyone is going to remember me by,” King says. “I try to make a positive impact on everybody that I meet.”

Don’t mistake his self-view for ego. Although King does feel he has a lot to offer, he spends more time admiring the positive traits of others. Since he arrived on campus, King lauds the #TEALnation community, giving credit to the people who have helped him along the way.

“CCU has made a positive impact on myself through all the people I have met,” explains King. “I have met a lot of people and I feel like they have supported me throughout my years at Coastal.”

Late nights at the library, fun times at Hick’s Dining Hall for Finals Frenzy events and memorable moments at various campus functions are all ways in which King has allowed those around him to shape who he is today. Just a semester shy of graduating, King is a confident young man, shaped by his strong heart and the support of others.

Upon graduating, King plans to move to Charlotte to pursue opportunities working for professional sports teams. But before that, we still have him for 16 more weeks. We hope this semester is the best one yet for King and that he continues to grow.

Q&A with King

How did you hear about Coastal?: I heard about Coastal my junior year of high school when one of my track teammates received an offer from the University. My senior year I looked more into it.

Why did you come to Coastal?: I came to Coastal because I liked the size of the campus. In my opinion, the campus is not too big, yet not that small. Coastal is also not that far from home, allowing me to go back whenever the need may arise. I’m also into sports and most of the athletics here at coastal were on the rise, so I was interested in that as well.

Favorite professors: Sharon Tutrone and Deborah Breede, Ph.D.

Favorite class: COMM 350: Interpersonal Communication

Favorite aspect of Coastal?: My favorite aspect of Coastal is how close the campus community is. I love how students and faculty members continue to recognize simple traditions like “Chants up” and “Teal Tuesday.” I see Coastal as one big family. I am glad I was able to make different connections with students and faculty members that will carry on past graduation.

Favorite aspect of living in the Conway/Myrtle Beach area?: All of the restaurants that Conway/ Myrtle Beach have. I always have countless options when deciding where to eat.

Clubs/Intramurals/other extracurricular activities involved in?: I am an AAIM Pioneer (African American Initiative for Males), a Teal Trailblazer (campus tour guide) and University Housing desk assistant.

Do you work anywhere currently (either on or off campus)?: I work at Publix in Carolina Forest.

Plans after graduation?: I plan to move to Charlotte and find a job involving sports broadcasting or sports journalism.

What are your hobbies?: In my free time I like to exercise and play basketball. I also like PlayStation.

Do you have any hidden talents?: I know how to play the cello.

Bonus Info: I have met a lot of great people here at Coastal and those people have impacted me tremendously in a positive way. All of the friends that I hang out with now are another reason why I chose to stay at Coastal. They have made this experience special.
