What is so attractive about attending a university with 10,000+ students but maintains an intimate type feel? Ask Morgan Howder. A sophomore from Huntersville, N.C., the unique atmosphere allows her to see familiar faces each time she walks across campus while at the same time never running out of new people to meet. This arrangement works out great for someone like Morgan, a dedicated and driven student who is involved in activities that allow her to both hang out with close friends (Alpha Delta Pi sorority) and meet new people (orientation leader/resident advisor).

It is not just the campus that Morgan has fallen in love with. Almost upon moving to Conway, she grew attached to the community. She enjoys the shops and restaurants as well as the town’s signature Riverwalk attraction. Both the campus itself and the Grand Strand community help to serve as a great backdrop for Morgan to reach her goals.

Inspired by Vice President for Campus Life and Student Engagement Debbie Conner, Morgan wants to work in student affairs. She knows a next step will be to earn her graduate degree but that might come after a stint in AmeriCorps. Until then, she will continue to impact students each day here at Coastal via her important on-campus jobs and responsibilities.

Hometown: Sacramento, Calif. and Huntersville, N.C.

Year in School: Sophomore

Major: Communication

How did you hear about Coastal?: My older brother came to a football camp down here my freshman year of high school. Then the summer after my junior year, my psychologist, who has worked with me about my learning disability told me that I would do great in the classroom environment here.

Why did you come to Coastal?: I fell in love with the community feeling as soon as I took my first tour. I was very pleased with how helpful everyone was and how willing they were to take time out of their day to make me feel at home.

Favorite professor: I really have loved all of my communication professors but Dr. Wes Fondren is truly amazing.

Favorite class: Communication 275: Communication Theory

Favorite aspect of Coastal?: The community support that I feel in every aspect of Coastal Carolina University is amazing.

Favorite aspect of living in the Conway/Myrtle Beach area?: I love the beach but something unique about Conway that is amazing is the Riverwalk. I love walking around downtown Conway and seeing the cute stores and places to eat.

Clubs/Intramurals/other extracurricular activities involved in?:  Alpha Delta Pi sorority, Student Leader Council, Resident Hall Association, orientation leader, Coastal Service specialist

Do you work anywhere currently (either on or off campus)?: Orientation leader for New Student and Family Programs, Coastal Service specialist for Leadership and Civic Engagement, resident advisor for University Housing.

Plans after graduation?: I have two possible plans. The first is serving in AmeriCorps then going to get my master’s degree in Student Affairs. My alternative plan would be to earn my master’s degree right after I graduate. I eventually want to be like Dr. Debbie Conner.

What are your hobbies?: I love the outdoors, meeting new people, cooking, baking, going to concerts, watching movies and being with my friends and family.

Do you have any hidden talents?: I can make some pretty awesome cookies, brownies and cakes.

Bonus Info: Coastal Carolina is an amazing university that inspires me to be the best version of myself. College may be hard at times but know you are never alone! If anyone ever needs help I would love to help as much as I can or direct you to someone else who can help even more.
