Collins A. Spivey

Collins Alexander Spivey was born on March 21, 1904, in Conway, S.C. He graduated from Conway High School in 1922 and earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from The Citadel in 1926. He was associated with People's National Bank (later Citizens & Southern Bank) of Conway as director, president and senior vice president from 1927 to 1974. He also was a tobacconist and real estate developer.

One of the earliest supporters of Coastal Carolina, Spivey served on the Horry County Higher Education Commission from 1959 to 1971. He was chairman of the Coastal Carolina College Building Fund Finance Committee, which raised funds for the first buildings on the present campus site in the 1960s. He also served on the commission's academic affairs, development, and planning committees.

He died Feb. 8, 1987.

Spivey was posthumously named an honorary founder of Coastal Carolina University in 1997.
