C. Foster Smith

C. Foster Smith was born in Florence County in 1919. He is a graduate of the University of South Carolina where he was selected for membership in Phi Beta Kappa, Omicron Delta Kappa, and Who's Who Among Students. Smith served in the U.S. Army at Hawaii and Okinawa during World War II. He then returned to Myrtle Beach and entered business. He was a partner with the Myrtle Beach accounting firm of Smith, Sapp, Bookhunt, Crumpler and Calliham.

Throughout his career, Smith was recognized for professional achievements. He was appointed the the South Carolina Board of Accountancy by the governor in 1969, and he served as its chairman from 1971 to 1974. He was member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and served as president from 1959 to 1960. He was a senior trustee of the South Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants Educational Fund.

For 10 years, he was a director of People's National Bank in Conway. After a merger in1969, he became a director of Citizens and Southern National Bank in Myrtle Beach, retiring in 1976.

Smith was a director of the Coastal Educational Foundation beginning in 1959. He has held the offices of treasurer, vice president and president. During his thirty years of service, he was active in a variety of development activities to support educational, cultural and capital expansion programs for Coastal Carolina University.

Smith was named an honorary founder of Coastal Carolina University in 1989.
