James C. Hipp

Original Founder

Loris businessman James C. Hipp (1918-2001) was among those who believed that it was important to establish a local institution of higher education for the people of Horry County. As a result, he became a charter member of the Coastal Educational Foundation Inc., and remained a strong supporter of the college. In 1964, when he became chairman of the Horry County Higher Education Commission, Hipp was responsible for administering the technical separation of the Foundation and Commission. He was called on again, in 1971, to chair the Commission during the construction of the Williams-Brice Building; he served on the Commission for more than 30 years.
