Biography

Madison Cates is an assistant professor of history with a focus in modern U.S. History. Before coming to CCU, he was a visiting instructor at Georgia Southern University and a graduate instructor at the University of Florida, where he earned his Ph.D in 2020. His publications include a recent article on environmental justice activism on Hilton Head Island during the 1970s, which appeared in the interdisciplinary journal, Southern Cultures. Dr. Cates is currently working on a book manuscript examining movements for environmental and economic justice in South Carolina since the 1960s. In the classroom, he enjoys engaging students in discussions about how the past shapes the communities, neighborhoods, and landscapes we inhabit. Dr. Cates is excited to be a part of the CCU community!
