Required OSHA Training

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires employers such as Coastal Carolina University to provide safety training in certain subjects depending on the employee’s job duties. The University's broad range of occupational areas (i.e., academic, professional, trades, administration, technical) prompted the development of this training matrix to determine the safety training courses relevant to an employee’s job duties. All University employees are responsible for completion of the applicable safety training requirements.

Most University employees will only need to complete the courses listed in the General Safety Requirements below; however, if you work with chemicals, work in a trade specialty, or have certain job risks you will be required to complete additional training.

To pinpoint your safety training requirements, the training matrix flowchart (below) asks a series of questions. When the appropriate questions are answered, a list of the OSHA training requirements specific to your job duties will appear (similar to the list of General Safety Awareness Training Requirements below). The classroom and refresher courses are highlighted on each listing.

If your job duties fall into an area that is not covered by the matrix, please contact EHS at 843-349-2770 (campus extension 2770). The safety training requirements for Public Safety are not outlined in the training matrix: the applicable training requirements are available through Public Safety training officers.

Required OSHA training courses are available online through Moodle or, in some cases, in a traditional classroom setting. Training courses are designated numerically: EHS 1xxx (1,000-level) courses are available on Moodle, “EHS 2xxx” (2,000-level) courses are classroom presentations or on Moodle, and EHS 3xxx (3,000-level) courses require periodic refresher and skills assessment courses.

Moodle courses are available 24/7. Questions about Moodle should be directed to CeTEAL (843-349-2353).
