David Betsch imageDavid Betsch joined University Housing at CCU in July 2011. He brings with him experience from five different universities, compiling more than 18 years of housing experience, including his undergraduate years working as a resident assistant. David earned his Bachelor of Arts in elementary education at the University of West Florida and his Master of Education in student personnel services at the University of South Carolina. David and his Resident Success Team are dedicated to creating a living and learning environment that is supportive of our residents’ academic pursuits.

Kat Mortensen imageKat Mortensen came to Coastal Carolina University in July of 2012 as an area director in University Housing and became an assistant director in 2016. She now serves as the associate director for resident success focusing on special interest housing, housing services and student employment. She is from Ogden, Iowa, originally but has been all over the United States. She earned her bachelor's degree in applied mathematics from Grand View University in 2006 and earned her master's degree in student affairs administration in higher education from Ball State University in 2007. She has enjoyed working with all of the dedicated and passionate people at the University and in University Housing. She has loved seeing all the progress and growth over the last six years and looks forward to seeing just where CCU will go.

David Speiser imageDavid Speiser
is the assistant director for recruitment and selection and is responsible for the processes of recruiting, interviewing and hiring all student staff. He is originally from East Brunswick, N.J., but has lived in Illinois the past four years where he served as a residence hall coordinator. David earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Hartford in West Hartford, Conn., and a Master of Education in college student affairs from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J. David is excited to be at Coastal Carolina University, where he can help connect students with opportunities for leadership and growth.

Jacqueline ChiariJacqui Chiari is excited to be serving as the Resident Success Specialist for Student Employment. She was born and raised in Cranford, New Jersey, but earned her bachelor’s degree in Marketing and Management from the University of South Carolina. She then went on to Florida State University where she earned her master’s degree in Higher Education, after which she worked in Student Involvement and Multicultural Programs at Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina. In Summer 2017, Jacqui served as a graduate intern with CCU’s New Student and Family Programs and is excited to be back at Coastal with the opportunity to learn and work with the amazing team of staff and students in University Housing!

Randy Smalls imageRandy Smalls
was born and raised in Upstate New York and has been a transplant in South Carolina since April of 2011. Working with a large student worker population allows Randy to have a direct impact on the overall college experience of our residential students. Randy is a graduate of SUNY Plattsburgh, Columbia College, and Walden University.

Liz Morgan imageLiz Morgan joined Coastal Carolina University in 2017 and is excited to begin year two as the housing services coordinator focusing on desk operations. Liz earned her bachelor's degree in social work from East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C. After spending four years as a resident director at High Point University in High Point, N.C., Liz has truly enjoyed working with the operations division of University Housing. Liz will graduate from the Master of Education in higher education administration program at Columbia College in Columbia, S.C., in August 2019.

Elvington Loop


Kaitlin NashKailtin Nash joins CCU as the assistant director for resident success for the communities on Elvington Loop. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Coastal Carolina University and a Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership from Charleston Southern University. Kaitlin brings experience from the Office of Admissions & Merit Awards at CCU, the Athletics Department at CCU, and Housing & Residence Life at Texas Christian University. She is passionate about helping students cultivate connections in their residential communities that make their community feel like home. She is excited to back at her alma mater and looks forward to helping students in Elvington Loop transition to CCU!

Ellie Gathings image

Ellie Gathings joined Coastal Carolina University in July of 2017 and is the community coordinator for Tradition Hall. Originally from the mountains of North Carolina, Ellie earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in theatre in 2015 from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where she was a resident adviser for three years. After completing her undergraduate degree, Ellie attended the University of South Carolina for a Master of Education in higher education and student affairs, graduating in 2017. At USC, she worked in University Housing as an assistant residence life coordinator. Ellie is excited to continue to live in the Southeast and work at Coastal.

‌‌Joey Dessino joineJoey Dessinod Teal Nation in January 2019 and serves as the Community Coordinator for Singleton-Young Hall (formerly known as CINO Hall). Joey, a New Jersey native received his bachelor's degree from Coastal Carolina University and his master's degree from the University of New Haven. Joey enjoys baseball, football, fitness and anything outdoors.  Joey is excited to be back at CCU and working to make his undergraduate institution amazing experience for students!

Alex DroseAlex Drose joined Coastal Carolina University in March 2019 as the Community Coordinator for Chanticleer Hall. Alex is from Charlotte, NC and attended UNC Chapel Hill where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics & Romance Languages (Italian). Alex interned in Saronno, Italy teaching English in a high school. She earned her Master of Arts in Higher Education at Appalachian State University then worked for a year and a half at the College of Charleston as a Professional Residence Hall Director. Alex loves to read, bake, and volunteer for US Quidditch. She is very excited to work with the first-year students here at CCU!

Jonathon GrayJonathon Gray joined Teal Nation in July 2019 as the Community Coordinator for Teal Hall. Jonathon Gray is from St. Louis, Missouri, and received his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. Jonathon also earned his Masters of Science in Education in Higher Education at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. At ODU, he worked as an Assistant Hall Director in the housing department. Jonathon is excited to live in Conway, and work at CCU.

Township Circle


Rachael Baker imageRachael Baker is excited to be changing roles at CCU to assistant director for resident success, Township Circle after serving two and a half years as the community coordinator for Ingle Hall. Originally from Wisconsin, she graduated from Concordia University Wisconsin in 2008 with a Master of Science in student personnel administration. Rachael earned her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Wisconsin at Parkside in criminal justice as well as a paralegal certification from Carthage College in 2004. Rachael has worked as a residence hall director at the University of Wisconsin at Parkside, Savannah College of Art and Design, and St. Norbert College as well as served as a program coordinator and adviser for grant programs in the state of Wisconsin. Rachael is excited to share her passion as it pertains to the transition for first-year students at Coastal Carolina University.

Tony WilliamsTony Williams recently joined Coastal Carolina University in July 2019 as the community coordinator of Eaglin Hall. He was born in New York but raised in East Stroudsburg, PA. He attended Kutztown University of Pennsylvania for both his undergraduate and graduate studies, receiving his Bachelor of Science in Clinical Psychology and Master of Education in Student Affairs in Higher Education. Tony enjoys laughing, dancing, music, and being creative. He is excited to be part of Teal Nation working with first year students!

Gabrielle LeeGabbie Lee joined Coastal Carolina University in July of 2019 and is the community coordinator for Ingle Hall.  She is from Little Rock, Arkansas and received a Bachelor of Arts in Professional Writing from the University of Central Arkansas.  Then, she later received her Master’s degree in Student Affairs Administration in Higher Education from Ball State University where she served as an Assistant Residence Hall Director.  Gabrielle is ecstatic to have the opportunity to serve students at CCU!

Tanya VattanasilTanya Vattanasil initially started at Coastal Carolina University as the Summer Camps and Conferences Intern in the summer of 2018. She loved it so much that she decided to come back full time starting July 2019 to serve as the community coordinator for The Woods community. Tanya was born in Thailand but grew up in the great state of Maine. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics with minors in Elementary Education & Accounting from Assumption College, and she recently earned her Master of Education in Higher Education in Student Affairs from Salem State University. Prior to joining CCU, Tanya worked as an Assistant Area Director at Babson College for two years. She is very excited to be back in sunny South Carolina officially and is looking forward to providing engaging and meaningful experiences for CCU students this upcoming year!

Amanda SpeiserAmanda Speiser joins University Housing from academic advising as the Assistant Director for Resident Success of University Place, The Gardens, and Georgetown. Before moving to South Carolina, she was a Residence Hall Coordinator at Illinois State University. Amanda earned her Bachelor’s degree in public relations and her Master’s degree in nonprofit administration from Bradley University in Peoria, IL. Through her experiences as a resident assistant and graduate hall director, Amanda discovered her passion for helping students navigate their collegiate experience, especially in housing. Amanda is excited to be at Coastal Carolina University to focus on the success of transfer and second-year plus students.

Chelsea Fried imageChelsea Riley
is in her second year at CCU and is the community coordinator for Grand Strand, The Gardens and Georgetown. She is from Concord, N.C., and received her Bachelor in Science in sociology from East Carolina University. Chelsea then attended Appalachian State University where she was a residence director while earning her Master in Education in college student development. She is excited to be working at Coastal Carolina University and to transition to the Grand Strand, Gardens and Georgetown community this year.

Katie Fisher imageKatie Fisher joined University Housing in November of 2018 and is the community coordinator for the Piedmont Community in University Place. After growing up in Charlotte, N.C., Katie went on to the University of North Carolina Wilmington to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies in 2014. Katie continued on at UNCW to earn a Master of Arts in conflict management and resolution in 2017 while working as an assistant residence coordinator for Housing and Residence Life. She is excited to be working in and exploring another part of the Carolina coast.

Will TaylorWill Taylor joined CCU in April 2019 and is the community coordinator for Sandhills. Will is originally from the Wilmington, NC area and started his Residence Life career as a RA at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) where he was Political Science major. He stayed at UNCW for graudate school and continued working in housing as an Assistant Residence Coordinator. After graduate school, Will became a Residence Hall Director at Stony Brook University on Long Island, NY for 4 years and served as the Residence Hall Association (RHA) Advisor.  Will is passionate in helping students grow as leaders, and building strong communities. He is looking forward on wearing teal again, and having amazing time here at Coastal!

Tyler RaglandTyler Ragland joined CCU in July 2019 and is the community coordinator for Low Country. Tyler is originally from the home of hot chicken and country music, Nashville, Tennessee.  Tyler received a Bachelor of Science degree in Communication Arts with a concentration in Internet and Web Technology in 2016. He then attended the University of Louisville to receive his Master of Education in College Student Personnel. Tyler is passionate in helping students grow in all facets of life and preparing them for their bright futures. He is looking forward to being at Coastal and to be able to #FeelTheTeal on a daily basis.

Carrie BovillCarrie Bovill joined University Housing in July 2019 and is the community coordinator for Blue Ridge. She is was born in Springfield, Massachusetts and was raised in Greenwood, South Carolina. Carrie went on to Morris College to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice. Carrie continued with her studies at Clark Atlanta University earning a Master degree in Public Administration with a concentration in Community and Economic Development. Carrie's higher education journey began at Duke University as a Site Coordinator and is now excited to be apart of the CCU family.
