Boeing Military to Civilian Success Program

At Coastal Carolina University

The Military to Civilian Success Program is a career transition and leadership development program for veterans, active duty military, and spouses of active duty military or veterans. The program, which began in 2019, is offered by Coastal Carolina University with generous financial support from Boeing.  The program is highly individualized and includes a detailed self-assessment of leadership strengths and weaknesses, the establishment of a personal development plan, and personalized coaching so that veterans will be able to understand how their skills will translate to different settings. During the program, participants will receive the latest information about techniques to succeed as a leader, practice the applications of techniques through case study and role play, and discuss how to transfer learned skills to the civilian workplace. Specific session topic areas include: understanding leadership, understanding yourself; using power and influence; negotiating; performance management; and working in teams.

Facilitators include experts in both veterans' transition to the civilian workforce as well as experts in organizational leadership. The program is led by Barbara A. Ritter, Ph.D., dean of the Davis College of Business at Jacksonville University, and Erika E. Small, Ph.D., interim dean of the E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration at Coastal Carolina University.

Participants who successfully complete the entire Boeing Military to Civilian Success Program will be awarded a Certificate of Completion from the Executive Development Programs at CCU. After awarding of the Certificate of Completion, program graduates will have access to additional services through the Office of Career Services at CCU.

Schedule and Formats

The Military to Civilian Success program is now offered in three formats.

Live Virtual. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we are now offering the program live, via Zoom. In this format, an orientation and five development modules will be offered in a single day virtual format, from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., with breaks between sessions. Participants can expect to review materials off-line  prior to the full-day session. During the live virtual sessions, participants can expect to engage with peers and an instructor in discussions, activities, cases and assessments. The program culminates in two hours of one-on-one coaching, scheduled individually between participant and coach.

The next session offered in this format will be: April 10 (9:00-5:00). Though there will be off-line breaks throughout the day, participants will need access to a computer with reliable internet for the day. In order to receive materials by mail in advance of the session day, please apply by April 4.

In-Person. The in-person format consists of a two-hour orientation, typically on a Friday evening, and five development modules of 1.5 hours each, on the following Saturday. In these sessions, participants can expect to engage in discussions, activities, and cases and assessments. The program culminates in two hours of one-on-one coaching, scheduled individually between participant and coach. The majority of sessions will occur on the Coastal Carolina University Conway campus, although remote locations in Myrtle Beach and Georgetown are also possible on an as-needed basis.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we are not currently scheduling in-person sessions. We hope to resume in-person sessions as conditions allow. Please check back for updated dates.

Online Self-Paced. In order to adapt to the Covid-19 pandemic, and to reach veterans, active military, and veteran/military spouses who are unable to attend in-person sessions, we now offer a Virtual Military to Civilian Success Program format. This version of the program still consists of an orientation and five development modules. However, this format is designed to allow participants to complete the program at their own pace. Each content session requires participants to prepare by reading and/or watching videos relevant to the topic of that session, watch the facilitator’s presentation on the topic, complete an activity (such as a discussion question or a short case) and submit it online, and complete a quiz about the topic. After completing the content sessions, participants will schedule one-on-one coaching with a facilitator.
