Sarah Fore Smith

Sarah Virginia Fore Smith was born July 25, 1921, in Latta, S.C., the daughter of Henry G. and Ruby Edwards Fore. She graduated from Mullins High School in 1938 and Mullins Business College in 1940. She was a corporate secretary with Canal Wood Corporation through 1951. In the 1940s she was an officer in one or more of the companies that merged to form Canal Industries.

At Coastal Carolina College in the 1960s and 1970s, she was instrumental in the establishment of the associate's degree program in nursing and she served on the College Scholarship Committee and the Culture Affairs Committee, the predecessor to the Wheelwright Council and the Kimbel Distinguished Lecture Series Committee.

Smith was a charter member of the Pierian Book Club and a past president of the Myrtle Beach Garden Club. She was Girl Scout Brownie troop leader and an artisan.

She married C. Foster Smith in 1947; they had three daughters and several grandchildren. She died September 18, 1988.

Smith was named an honorary founder of Coastal Carolina University in 1992.
