He recently co-authored the following article, which was published in in Preventive Medicine Reports: Models of school recess for combatting overweight in the United States.  In comparing previous studies of children’s energy expenditure during recess to having no recess, they found that boys and girls would expend approximately 55,000 and 50,000 kcalories, respectively, over six years of elementary school. These values equate to about 15 pounds of weight in a static energy balance model. The duration of recess had a greater impact on energy expenditure than the intensity of physical activity during recess.
