Biography

Dr. Shari Orisich (Ph.D. University of Maryland--College Park, 2013) is an associate professor of History at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, SC with an area specialization in Latin America. Her research has focused on criminal sciences, childhood, youth, and urban life in 20th century Mexico. She has published on visual culture and juvenile crime, eugenics in post-revolutionary Mexico City, and the transnational  dimensions of "at-risk" youth. Her current research explores historical memory and girlhood in Cuba before, during, and after the revolution through the use of oral interviews with women living in Havana today. Dr. Orisich teaches comparative approaches to history on the topics of genocide and political violence as well as topical courses on US-Latin American Relations, Women and Power in the Americas, and Central American History. In both survey and upper-level courses, she integrates high-impact learning practices including the historical role-playing pedagogy "Reacting to the Past". Her Vizsla, "Janka" continues to provide the unique combination of inspiration and exasperation for each of Dr. O's intellectual endeavors.
