Chiara Gamberi Biography

Professor Gamberi PictureMolecular developmental biologist, Professor Chiara Gamberi studies the temporal and spatial regulation of RNA molecules that regulate cellular and organism polarization. Differentiation of head from tail underlies normal embryo development. Similarly, cellular polarization to distinguish the inside from outside of tissues is critical in the formation and maintenance of tubules. Employing a first-in-kind Drosophila model for cystic kidney disease that she developed, Gamberi is studying the influence of lost polarity on abnormal cell proliferation and renal tubule cyst formation, as well as the effects of novel drug candidates for restoring normal tissue growth and function. A pioneer in research and the classroom, Gamberi has implemented innovative and inclusive write-to-learn pedagogy that yielded three peer-reviewed publications co-authored by almost three hundred undergraduates in enrolled in her classes.
