Mentoring event set for April 9 at CCU
The purpose of the event is to provide public school students participating in the mentoring program with the opportunity to visit the college campus to see where their mentors go to school. Mentors normally visit children at their school each week. Not only does it make the college experience more real to these students, but it motivates them to consider higher education in their own futures.
"A Day in the Life of a College Student" is hosted by 150 CCU student mentors as well as 50 volunteer students, faculty and staff members and Chauncey. The event will feature a variety of activities that encourage students to succeed through education, science and artistic expression. Also, each student will receive a new book to promote literacy and reading.
Attending elementary schools are Carolina Forest, Conway, Homewood, Myrtle Beach, Palmetto Bays, South Conway and Waccamaw. Attending middle schools are Conway, Myrtle Beach and Whittemore Park.
The Dalton and Linda Floyd Family TEALmentors program is housed in CCU's Biddle Center for Teaching, Learning and Community Engagement within the Spadoni College of Education. The program teaches CCU students to become positive role models for children in South Carolina schools to ensure success in and out of the classroom.
