Coastal Carolina University held its annual Student Involvement and Leadership Awards ceremony Monday night to celebrate exceptional and successful student organizations and leaders from the 2017-2018 academic year.

Award-winning students

Outstanding Community Service by an Individual: Margaret Head, a marine science major from Central, S.C.

Unsung Hero of the Year: Ian Livingston Brooking, a communication major from Somerset, Ky.

Rising Leader of the Year: Cora Allard-Zach, a psychology major from Leominster, Mass.

Student Organization President of the Year: Wyatt Davies, president of Phi Sigma Pi and an information systems major from Johns Island, S.C.

Fraternity and Sorority Life Greek Man of the Year: Joseph DeStefano, a marketing major from Airmont, N.Y.

Fraternity and Sorority Life Greek Woman of the Year: Taylor Dawsey, a psychology major from Simpsonville, S.C.

Haven Hart Impact Award: Logan Jarrell, a marine science and biology double major from Beckley, W.Va.

Fraternity and Sorority Life Chapter President: Brenna Peterson, president of Phi Sigma Sigma and an undeclared major from Bridgewater, Mass.

Student Leader of the Year: Mikayla Morris, a middle level education major from Georgetown, S.C.

The Haven Hart Impact Award was created in 2012 in honor of former Dean Haven Hart for her dedication to campus and community involvement. It is presented annually to a student who has served as a role model to other students through his/her campus involvement. The recipients must have been heavily involved in a variety of organizations on campus and served in multiple leadership positions. This student must also excel academically, making him/or a well-rounded graduate and community member.

Jarrell has served as a senator in the Student Government Association for the College of Science and as the chair of the building and grounds committee and the constitution and bylaws committee. He has served as the mission and logistics lead for CCU's Relay for Life event, the political action chair for CCU's chapter of the NAACP, the president of the Gardens Community Council, the president of the Chanticleer Community Council, a reporter for The Chanticleer student newspaper, and a science tutor. He is a member of Phi Eta Sigma, Beta Beta Beta, Omicron Delta Kappa, and Golden Key, all academic honor societies.

Bell Tower Award (Program of the Year): Out of the Darkness Walk, organized by the SHORE (Students Helping Others Reach Excellence) peer educators

Student Organization of the Year: Phi Sigma Pi

The Bell Tower Award stands for excellence in programming that all CCU student organizations should strive for each time they host an event. This award is given to the organization that successfully completed an outstanding program or event during the 2017-2018 academic year. The program must have promoted a sense of campus community and created a positive reflection of the organization and the University.

The Out of the Darkness Walk was held March 24 on CCU's campus and raised more than $10,000 for suicide prevention. More than 240 walkers participated across nearly 30 teams.

Greg Nance, military funding coordinator in the Office of Veteran Services and the adviser for the Student Veterans Association at CCU won the Student Organization Adviser of the Year Award.
