Communication students organize
"We are excited to partner with House of Blues to obtain a bit of relief for those affected by Hurricane Florence and its aftermath," said Deborah Breede, Coastal Carolina professor of communication. "This disaster has impacted our community, our campus and our students. My students stand 'Carolina strong' with House of Blues and Horry County in order to raise funds for hurricane relief."
The event will start at 6 p.m. in the dining room area of House of Blues and will showcase live performances from area musicians. The House of Blues restaurant and bar will be serving their full menu; reservations are strongly encouraged.
There will be an art sale and raffle featuring local businesses in support of the hurricane relief effort. The event is for all ages and will include child-friendly activities such as face painting, a funky photo booth, and educational games displayed throughout the Carolina room area.
"Here at House of Blues we like to support our community in any way we can and are always excited to have an opportunity to be involved with the local university," said Dawn Temples Knopff, marketing and promotions manager for House of Blues Myrtle Beach. "By hosting this event with CCU, we are providing the community with an opportunity to enjoy a nice family dinner with live music and plenty of activities for the kids."
Breede has been teaching a course in communication activism since 2013, and students in the classes have taken on such projects as clothing drives for local schools, area cleanups and more. The course is broken down into two portions: an examination of various outlets and topics of social activism throughout contemporary culture; and applying the knowledge learned in the classroom to "the field" as students propose, generate and enact their own activism projects.
