CCU’s 2020-2021 Student Involvement and Leadership Awards announced

Coastal Carolina University held its annual Student Involvement and Leadership Awards (SILA) ceremony on Tuesday, April 20, at 7 p.m. at Wheelwright Auditorium. To ensure COVID-19 protocols were followed, only individuals who applied for an award or were a part of the ceremony could attend the in-person ceremony. The event was livestreamed for those who could not be physically present.

During this year’s ceremony, outstanding students, faculty, and staff, as well as groups, were recognized and received a plaque, certificate, or a coveted Chanticleer rooster trophy.

Anaiya Moore of Columbia, S.C., was presented the Ronald D. Lackey Service Award, presented annually to a CCU senior who serves the University community with conspicuous service through involvement and leadership in campus and community activities. She was also named winner of the Haven Hart Impact Award, presented annually to a CCU senior who has served as a role model to other students through their campus involvement, and Greek Woman of the Year for her involvement with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Moore is a Wall Fellow, vice president of Women of Color, and a residential support mentor for the LIFE program, among other honors.

2020-2021 winners are as follows:

• Step Up Award – Jasmine Sampson of Columbia, S.C.

• Resident Adviser of the Year – Lindsey Rehmer of Milford, Ohio

• Student Affairs Student Engagement Award – Fredanna Duro McGough, Ph.D., and Paul Richardson, Ph.D.

• SGA Legislation of the Year – TimelyMD bill authored by Kellen Threatt of Kershaw, S.C.

• SGA Rising Senator – Haileigh Miller of Lake Hiawatha, N.J.

• SGA Chad M. Beatty Senator of the Year – Zachary Lane of Aynor, S.C.

• Academic Advisor of the Year – Lindsay Hanks

• Pat Singleton-Young Student Advocate of the Year – Tiffany Hollis, Ph.D.

• Club Sport of the Year – Men’s Volleyball

• Outstanding Philanthropy by a Student Organization – Her Campus

• Student Organization of the Year – Women of Color

• Most Improved Student Organization – Sociology/Criminology Club

• Bell Tower Award – Women of Color for SOS: Saving Our Sisters Mental Health Program

• Best Virtual Program – Chinese Culture and Language Exchange Club for its weekly interactive meetings

• Rising Leader of the Year – Alexandria Banning of Myrtle Beach, S.C.

• Community Service by an individual – Keoshia Huffman of North, S.C.

• Unsung Hero – Grace Carrino of Greensboro, N.C.

• Student Organization President of the Year – Samantha Torsiello of Monroe Township, N.J.

• Haven Hart Impact Award – Anaiya Moore of Columbia, S.C.

• Student Organization Advisor of the Year – Tiffany Hollis, Ph.D.

• Fraternity and Sorority Life Chapter of the Year – Chi Omega

• Fraternity and Sorority Life Outstanding Community Service – Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.

• Fraternity and Sorority Life Outstanding Philanthropy – Phi Sigma Sigma

• Fraternity and Sorority Life Chapter President of the Year – Alethea Aivialotis of Winchester, N.H.

• Fraternity and Sorority Life Greek Woman – Anaiya Moore of Columbia, S.C.

• Fraternity and Sorority Life Greek Man – Aaron Pickering of Blythewood, S.C.

• Student Leader of the Year – Dy’Mond Franklin of Columbia, S.C.

During the ceremony, President Michael T. Benson introduced and welcomed the 2021-2022 CCU Student Government Association officers. They are:

• Student Body President – Brianna Martin of Mount Pleasant, S.C.

• Executive Vice President – Euniqua Jones of Florence, S.C.

• Vice President of Finance – Tyler Williams of Port St. Lucie, Fla.

• Vice President of Public Relations – Tykia Scott of Dalzell, S.C.

Benson, along with Brittany Donatelli-Parks, Teal and Bronze Society advisor, and Diane Sanders, executive director of alumni relations, inducted the inaugural class of the Teal and Bronze Society, a group of students who specialize in “embodying school spirit and teaching others about the beloved traditions at Coastal Carolina University.” These students assist in events such as Teal Tuesday, homecoming, and other campus events that spread the teal spirit all over the community.

The 2021-2022 Teal and Bronze Society members are:
