CCU accounting students offer free tax preparation through IRS VITA program

February 14, 2023

Accounting students in Coastal Carolina University’s E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration, in conjunction with the Internal Revenue Service’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, are offering free income tax preparation again this year. Trained student volunteers will prepare and e-file basic federal and state income tax returns for those earning less than $60,000 a year.

VITA services will continue through the duration of tax season ending April 18. Filings will be prepared on a first-come, first-served basis in the Coastal Science Center, room 205. Sessions are available on Wednesdays from 2-5 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and typically last approximately one hour. Appointments are not available. “This program provides a fantastic opportunity for our students to gain valuable professional experience and interpersonal skills while giving back to the community,” said Jimmy Barnes, CPA, lecturer in accounting at CCU. “If your income is under $60,000, and you do not have a lot of items on your return, please come out and let the wonderful volunteers for Coastal Carolina help you get your tax return filed.”
