History Scholarships and Awards

The Department of History awards three to four scholarships to students and names one outstanding student every year.

2022-2023 Awards/Scholarships

The James Branham Endowed Award in History recognizes the history graduate with the highest academic standing, and includes both a monetary award and a medal. James Branham was a longtime faculty member, having been a history professor at Coastal from 1963 to 1991. He helped present the first award named in his honor in 2007 and passed away in 2009.

The History Faculty and Alumni Scholarship was created in 2014 by faculty members of the Department of History to commend an outstanding rising senior majoring in history and holding a minimum 3.5 GPA. Faculty, and now alumni, seek to financially reward a history major at a time when the cost of a public college education is high because of a lack of federal and state funding.

The Coley B. Prather Memorial Scholarship awards a history major who might write local history for publication, especially the history of Socastee area of Horry County. The History Department continues to encourage undergraduate research on Horry County and the Carolina Lowcountry. This scholarship was endowed by a generous gift from Francis C. Prather in 2001.

The graduating senior named the Outstanding Student in History is recognized at the annual Spring Honors Convocation. It is an exciting time of the year as one student from every department receives an award for academic achievement. Our recipients remain competitive for the University-wide Outstanding Student.

To apply for an award/scholarship, see Christopher Gunn, Chair of the History Department, to obtain an application.
