Powell and Fox to present recital at Coastal Carolina
Fox, a native of Cincinnati, was a resident member of the Cincinnati Opera from 1976 to 1980. He was principal guest artist at the Frankfurt Opera where his roles included Amonasro in Aida, Pizarro in Fidelio, Klingsor in Parsifal, Nick Shadow in The Rake’s Progress, Escamillo in Carmen, as well as Orest in Elektra and Alberich in Wagner’s Ring cycle. He has also sung in many of the world’s leading opera houses including the San Francisco Opera, the Metropolitan Opera and with the companies in Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., San Diego, Pittsburgh, Toronto, Munich, Berlin, Paris, Montpellier, Milan (La Scala), Rome, Bologna, Turin and Brussels, among others.
Among the baritone’s most recent engagements are Tristan und Isolde in Strasbourg and Buenos Aires; Salome in Buenos Aires; and Parsifal in Munich. Upcoming are Elektra in Baltimore, The Makropulos Case at the Met, and Tosca for Los Angeles Opera. He has also performed at the Festival of Music and Arts in Pawleys Island.
Powell, who is associate professor and chair of Coastal’s Department of Performing Arts, is a veteran performer who has served as president of the Coastal Concert Association, music director of the Festival of Music and Art at Pawleys Island, founding director of the Musicale de Geneve series and a member of the board of directors of the Long Bay Symphony. Powell has performed with the South Carolina Symphony Orchestra, the Jupiter Symphony and is a frequent soloist with the Long Bay Symphony. Powell earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Oklahoma and a master’s and doctorate in music from Indiana University, where he was a student of Michel Block.
