Poet Paul Allen to read at Coastal Carolina University

Poet Paul Allen will read from his Pulitzer Prize-nominated book “American Crawl” at Coastal Carolina University on Thursday, Nov. 10 at 4 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Edwards Building. The event is free and open to the public.

The reading is part of “The Words to Say It” series the event is sponsored by the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts and the Office of Student Activities.

Allen, an Alabama native, teaches at the College of Charleston. He founded the creative writing program and directs the Annual Charleston Writer’s Conference. He has earned the John Williams Andrews Narrative Poetry Prize, a Rainmaker Award and the South Carolina Arts Commission’s Individual Artist Fellowship in Poetry. In addition, Allen combines poetry and music on his CD “Man with the Hardest Belly.” His poems appear in a number of journals, including the Southern Review, Northwest Review, Southern Poetry Review, Poetry Northwest, Ontario Review, New England Review, Iowa Review and Puerto Del Sol. They also have been reprinted in several anthologies, among them “Odd Angles of Heaven: Contemporary Poetry by People of Faith” (1994). He has given more than 100 readings and performances in a dozen states.
