Ana Maria Schuhmann has been named Singleton Professor of Education and director of the Biddle Center for Teaching and Learning, part of Coastal's Spadoni College of Education. Richard Johnson, of Salisbury, Md., is the new chair of Coastal's Department of Music in the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts.

Pedro Maligo, of East Lansing, Mich., is the new chair of the Department of Foreign Languages, also in the Edwards College.

Schuhmann, of Holmdel, N.J., is a professor emerita and dean of the College of Education at Kean University in Union, N.J. An educator for more than 25 years, she began her career as a Spanish and elementary teacher in the Louisville, Ky., public schools. She joined the Kean faculty in 1974 and was appointed dean of the College of Education in 1990. She earned a bachelor's degree at Profesorado en Lenguas Vivas in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and master's and doctorate degree in language education at Rutgers University.

Coastal's Biddle Center promotes the study and practice of advanced methods in educational delivery, with emphasis on improving the performance of at-risk K-12 students and providing professional development and resources for area teachers.

Maligo has been an associate professor of romance and classical languages at Michigan State University where he taught since 1989. Prior to that, he was a visiting lecturer of Portuguese at Yale University and assistant instructor of Portuguese and Spanish at the University of Texas. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees at Pontificia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro and a doctorate in Portuguese at the University of Texas.

Johnson, of Salisbury Md., has been in arts administration with the Fulton School of Liberal Arrts at Salisbury University for nine years. He is a professor of music and director of instrumental music of the Department of Music at Salisbury. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees in music education at the University of Illinois and a doctorate at Michigan State University.
