A group of 15 women student leaders at Coastal Carolina University have been chosen to take part in a financial awareness project designed to teach students to achieve personal economic security. The program, created through a $5,000 grant from the American Association of University Women (AAUW), provides personal financial training for the participants, who will share what they learn at a campus forum on April 4.

The students, who were nominated by professional women staff and faculty members of CCU, are Sarah Baker of Greenville, Taryn Bell of Fort Washington, Md., Sarah Guckien of Overland Park, Kan., Cherita Hunt of Summerville, Felecia Mebane of Conway, Ashton Mincey of Saint George, Marissa Mitzner of Conway, Faith Newton of Port Royal, Emma O'Brien-Gayes of Myrtle Beach, Shayla Sanders of Seabook, Janet Shokal of Conway, Tylandra Sims of Dorchester, Jasmine Tyler of Conway and Tina Williams of Norway, S.C.

The students have participated in a four-session workshop on financial literacy led by Theresa Ross of Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Conway. They will address the Coastal student community in a campus forum called "Money Talks" on April 4 at 3 p.m. in Wall Auditorium.

A public "Money Talks" forum is scheduled for April 24 at 5:30 p.m. in Wall Auditorium in conjunction with the annual AAUW "Equal Pay Day" event. A panel of successful women investors from Myrtle Beach, led by Eileen Kim of Edward Jones Investments, will talk about creating personal economic security.

A portion of the funds from this grant will be used to purchase personal finance resources for Coastal's Kimbel Library.
