Coastal Carolina University's Spadoni College of Education will present its fourth annual Ethics in Education Symposium on Thursday, March 13 at 6:30 p.m. in Wheelwright Auditorium. James A. Banks, professor of diversity studies at the University of Washington, Seattle, will be the speaker. The event is free and open to the public, but tickets are required.

Banks, who is also director of the Center for Multicultural Education at UW, earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education and social science from Chicago State University and a master's degree and doctorate from Michigan State University. He has written many books, including "Teaching Strategies for Ethnic Studies," as well as more than 100 articles, book submissions and reviews for publications including the Educational Researcher, Social Education and The Journal of Negro Education. He has lectured and presented internationally, and he received a Spencer Fellowship from the National Academy of Education in 1973. Banks' honors and awards are numerous.

CCU's Ethics in Education Symposium is held annually and serves to reinforce the importance of high ethical standards among educators of all levels. The event is sponsored by the Spadoni Family of Myrtle Beach through CCU's Biddle Center for Teaching and Learning. Symposium speakers have included the late Asa Grant Hilliard III, Fuller E. Callaway Professor of Urban Education at Georgia State University; Betty Siegel, past president of Kennesaw State University, and Samuel Betances, an expert on diversity, race and gender issues.
