CCU to host student leadership conference

An estimated 255 students from the Carolinas and Virginia are expected to attend the 15th annual Southeastern African-American Student Leadership Conference at Coastal Carolina University from Friday, March 28 to Sunday, March 30.

The conference, whose theme is "Caution: We're Building Leaders...Let 'em Work, Let 'em Lead," is sponsored by Coastal's Office of Student Affairs and the Office of Multicultural Student Services.

Sessions include topics such as: "The Mis-Education of the Black Greek," "Being a Student Leader and Achieving Academic Success" and "Millennials: The People, The Places and Their Things," among others. Events are not open to the public.

Some of the planned events include:

* Opening speaker Jamie Washington, Friday, March 28, 5:10 p.m., Wall Auditorium. Washington has been an educator and administrator in higher education for more than 20 years. He is president and founder of the Washington Consulting Group and faculty member of the Social Justice Training Institute. He is also involved in the Leadershape Institute and the National Certified Student Leader program.

* "Extravaganza Amateur Dance Contest," a Greek "Stroll Off" and Step Exhibition, Saturday, March 29, 8 p.m., Wall Auditorium

* Keynote speaker Delatorro L. McNeil II, Saturday, March 29, 6 p.m., Williams-Brice Recreation Center. McNeil is a bestselling author, successful entrepreneur and television personality. He is CEO of Delatorro Worldwide Empowerment and president of three corporations. He was named "One of the Top Four Best College Campus Speakers" by American College Personnel Association.

* Speaker Dennis Rahiim Watson, 10 a.m., Sunday, March 30, Wall Auditorium. Watson, a motivational speaker, is president of the National Black Youth Leadership Council based in New York. He has lectured and conducted workshops at more than 200 colleges and universities worldwide.

Other university sponsors for the event include the Division of Student Affairs, Office of the Provost, Student Government Association, Office of Student Activities & Leadership, and Leadership Challenge.
