Area musical ensembles to present Brahms' 'Requiem'

Coastal Carolina University's Department of Music, in collaboration with area musical ensembles, will present the beloved "German Requiem" by Johannes Brahms on Friday, Oct. 17 at 7:30 p.m. in Wheelwright Auditorium.

The landmark concert will involve various organizations, including the Coastal Carolina University Chamber and Concert Choirs, the choirs from Charleston Southern University, the Long Bay Symphony and members of the Carolina Master Chorale and the choir from Trinity Episcopal Church.

Soloists are Patti Edwards and Jeffrey Jones, both members of the Coastal Carolina University voice faculty. Terri Sinclair, director of choral activities and coordinator of vocal studies at the University, will conduct.

"It is a massive undertaking and a spectacular piece of music," said Sinclair, who was recipient of the Teacher of the Year award in 2005-2006.

Sinclair earned a bachelor's degree in piano performance from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a master's degree in choral conducting from Florida State University and a doctor of musical arts degree in choral conducting from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Edwards, a native of Georgetown, earned a bachelor's degree in music from Mars Hill College, a master's degree in vocal performance and a graduate diploma in vocal chamber music from Saint Louis Conservatory, and a doctorate from the University of North Texas. She has appeared with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, the Omaha Symphony, the St. Louis Symphony Chamber Series and the Piccolo Spoleto Festival.

Jones, assistant professor of music at Coastal Carolina University, earned a master's degree in opera performance and a doctor of music arts degree in vocal performance at Arizona State University. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of North Texas and is a graduate of the Interlochen Arts Academy.

General admission is $9; alumni and senior citizens are $7, Coastal Carolina University and HGTC students are free (one ticket per valid ID); Coastal Carolina University and HGTC faculty/staff free (two tickets per valid ID); teens and children, free.
