Coastal Carolina University brings home Palmetto Cup

October 9, 2008

A Coastal Carolina University intramural flag football team called "Don't Hassle the Hoff" brought the Palmetto Cup home last weekend following tournament play at the University of South Carolina, beating out teams from seven other state colleges and universities. The winning team will compete in the regional flag football tournament Nov. 7 to 9 at the University of North Carolina Wilmington.

The win makes three years in a row that a Coastal Carolina University team has won the men's Palmetto Cup and also the fifth straight year that the University has had all-tournament officials as well. One of the women's teams also won the sportsmanship award.

More than 80 Coastal Carolina University students traveled to Columbia last weekend for the 5th annual Palmetto Cup, a statewide intramural flag football tournament that featured five teams from the University - three men's and two women's teams. Seven student officials also traveled to the tournament.

Teams were divided into pools, and the three men's teams each won their pool and advanced to the playoff bracket of the tournament. Of the four semifinalist men's teams, three of them were Coastal Carolina squads, so that two teams from the University played each other in the men's final.

"Don't Hassle the Hoff" defeated the two-time Palmetto Cup defending champs "U Don't Wanna Know," also from Coastal Carolina, 20-19 in the final game.

Two of the student officials - Tom Cocke and Drew Bruton - won all-tournament honors.

Twenty-one teams from around the state competed (16 men's and five women's). Schools competing in the statewide tournament included Clemson, Allen, Lander, North Greenville, Winthrop universities, the Citadel and College of Charleston.
