Pop 101 concert celebrates No. 2 rock hits

Pop 101, Coastal Carolina University's student rock 'n' roll group, will perform "Songs That Only Made It To Number 2" on Monday, Nov. 17 at 7:30 p.m. in Wheelwright Auditorium.

General admission is $9; seniors and alumni, $7; Coastal Carolina University and Horry Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) students, one free ticket per valid ID; Coastal Carolina University and HGTC faculty and staff, two free tickets per valid ID; teens and children, free.

The concert will feature Coastal Carolina University's contemporary music ensemble performing rock and pop music from the 1950s to present, including artists such as Elton John, Moody Blues, Pearl Jam, Bob Dylan, Shania Twain, Peter Paul & Mary, Paul Simon and many more. The band is composed of student musicians on guitars, bass, drums, keyboards and horns.

Dan O'Reilly, instructor of music at Coastal Carolina University, has been the director of the group since 2002. Since then, he has expanded the acoustic-based which formerly consisted of only vocalists and guitars.

O'Reilly has extensive performing experience in New York City and along the Grand Strand at venues such as the House of Blues, Broadway at the Beach, the Palace Theatre and Brookgreen Gardens. In addition to Pop 101, O'Reilly directs the University's Jazz After Hours Big Band, the After Hours Improvisation Combo and the Saxophone Ensemble.
