CCU faculty duo to perform recital of English songs

Coastal Carolina University faculty members Jeffrey L. Jones and Philip Powell will perform a recital of English songs on Sunday, Oct. 10 at 3 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts.

General admission is $3, and children (10 & under) are admitted free. CCU and HGTC students receive one free ticket per valid ID and CCU, and HGTC faculty and staff receive two free tickets per valid ID.

The program highlights the work of 20th century English art song and includes songs by William Alwyn, Gerald Finzi, Roger Quilter and Ralph Vaughan Williams. Finzi's "Let Us Garlands Bring" and the Quilter selections are familiar settings of Shakespeare poems. The program will also include the Southeast premiere of William Alwyn's "Six Nocturnes."

Jones, assistant professor of music, earned a bachelor’s degree in music from the University of North Texas, and master’s and doctoral degrees from Arizona State University. Jones is also a graduate of Interlochen Arts Academy. He has performed with numerous groups including the Arizona Opera, Arizona State Lyric Opera Theater, Atlanta Opera, Atlanta Lyric Opera and others. Jones is currently the artist-in-residence with the Carolina Master Chorale in Myrtle Beach.

Powell, professor of music, joined the University faculty in 1988. He has served as president of the Coastal Concert Association, music director of the Festival of Music and Art at Pawleys Island, founding director of the Musicale de Geneve series and a member of the board of directors of the Long Bay Symphony. Powell earned a bachelor’s degree in music from the University of Oklahoma, and master’s and doctoral degrees from Indiana University.
