CCU hosts ‘Do No Harm’ screening on Southern Circuit Tour

February 14, 2011

“Do No Harm,” a documentary exposing unethical hospital practices, will be showing at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22, in the Wall Auditorium of the E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration. Tickets are $5.

The 2009 documentary follows Dr. John Bagnato, a general surgeon, and Charles Rehberg, an accountant, who together act as whistle-blowers to expose unethical billing practices for the uninsured and underinsured patients at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany, Ga. The two men withstand relentless attacks from hospital officials and local authorities to reveal the nonprofit hospital’s millions of dollars in offshore bank accounts, lucrative for-profit businesses and aggressive collection tactics.

Bagnato and Rehberg’s investigations drew national attention to Phoebe Putney, which led to the further uncovering of corruption within nonprofit hospitals throughout the United States and national awareness of unreasonable health care costs.

“Do No Harm” producer/director Rebecca Schanberg and producer/editor Susanne Suffredin will be on hand for a meet-and-greet after the film presentation. Schanberg earned a bachelor’s degree in human biology from Stanford University and worked as director of corporate philanthropy at Polo Ralph Lauren. “Do No Harm” is her directorial debut. Suffredin, who earned a B.F.A. from the University of Illinois, was nominated for an editing Emmy for “Team of Broken Dreams,” an Olympics special for NBC. She was also honored with a Monitor Award and a Special Achievement Award for directing from the International Television Association.

“Do No Harm” is one in a series of three films presented at CCU as part of the 2010-2011 Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers. (The spring season ticket package for all three films is $10.) A program of South Arts, it is the nation’s only regional tour of independent filmmakers.
