Lifelong Learning starts second spring term

March 8, 2011

More than 165 courses are being offered during the “Second Spring” term of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Coastal Carolina University.

Classes such as gardening, computer skills, history, music, photography and creative writing skills will be offered at outreach centers in Conway, Myrtle Beach and Litchfield Beach.

New topics and new teachers have been added for the term, which runs through May. In Conway at the Foundation Center, Jim Hossbach will introduce the Principles of Wood Carving, while Sam Hughes will lead Current Affairs and Political Issues. The Foundation Center is at U.S. 501 and Winyah Road.

New to the Myrtle Beach Education Center, at U.S. 17 Bypass and 79th Avenue North, will be Zumba with Kim Hensen, Basic Italic Calligraphy with Traci Green, and Reading Aloud to Children and The Art of Note Writing with Carolyn Jones.

At the Waccamaw Higher Education Center, at 160 Willbrook Boulevard, just off U.S. 17 in Litchfield, the current events and calligraphy courses will also be offered. Also, Georgeann Jansson will teach Nuts & Bolts of Creative Writing; Denise James will offer a Creative Writing Workshop for the Busy Adult; Pat Stiles will teach Time for a “Faith Lift;” and Bridget Kelly will lead two Reiki Level 1 workshops in April and May.

Continuing classes in yoga, tai chi, line dancing and ballroom dancing aim to keep the OLLI students fit, while the numerous special interest groups (book clubs, Academies of Gardening, PC and Mac Computer Clubs, Investor Education Club, Crazy Patch Club, Birding Club, Civic Literacy Issues & Answers, French Conversation Club and the Gilles Bridge Society) provide entertainment and education free with OLLI membership.

The membership fee is $20 and valid through Sept. 30. Membership also includes discounts at most CCU cultural events, Long Bay Symphony performances, performances at Atlantic Stage and the Murrells Inlet Community Theatre, and admission to the Georgetown County History Museum. OLLI members also get a discount for the early morning program of A.B.L.E., a special fitness program targeted for those 50 and older, and at Quail Creek Golf Course and the Conway Wellness & Fitness Center.
