"There’s an Alligator Under my Bed" and "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" cakes won top honors at Coastal Carolina University's second annual Edible Book Fair sponsored by Kimbel Library on Monday, April 11.

Thirty-three edible entrees based on book titles, concepts and characters were entered into the competition, according to coordinator John Watts, CCU reference and outreach librarian.

Brittany Gaillard, a CCU psychology major from Charleston, won first place for an individual creation with her fondant entry “There’s an Alligator Under my Bed” based on the children's book by Mercer Mayer.

"The Very Hungry Caterpillar" cake, made of cupcakes, lollipop antennae and nose, and lemon slice eyes, won Best Group Creation. The entry, in the name of First Book, was created by Megan McIlreavy, assistant professor of psychology, and Mona Prufer, who works in the Office of University Communication. The classic children's tale was written by Eric Carle in 1969. (There were three hungry caterpillar cakes in the contest.)

CCU students, faculty and staff, along with members of the community, were invited to create and submit edible books, which had to be at least partially edible representations of any written work.

The winners received gift certificates to Papa John’s and Java City.
