CCU faculty and guest soprano to perform concert

Coastal Carolina University music professors Jeffrey Jones and Philip Powell will be joined by guest artist Deborah Popham to present a concert of opera music entitled “Bel Canto to Bohême, and Everything In Between” at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 11. The event will be held in the Recital Hall in the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts.

Jones, baritone, Powell, piano, and Popham, soprano, will perform a variety of arias and duets by celebrated opera composers including Mozart, Donizetti, Verdi and Puccini.

Popham is an assistant music professor at Shorter University in Rome, Ga., and has excelled as a performing soprano as well as an international soloist, performing in Italy and Switzerland. She also has director credits for “The Old Man and the Thief” and is recognized for directing scenes from productions of “Don Giovanni,” “Die Fledermaus” and “The Mikado.” Prior to her arrival at Shorter, she taught voice at Northeastern State University and the University of Akron.

Jones is an assistant professor in voice, and has an extensive performing record including two concerts at Carnegie Hall. Powell has been at CCU since 1988. He is an associate professor of music who teaches piano and piano pedagogy.

Tickets are $3 for the general public, and free for CCU and Horry Georgetown Technical College students and faculty/staff as well as for children ages 10 and younger. Free tickets can be picked up at the Wheelwright Box Office at CCU from 9 a.m to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
